GLENWOOD SPRINGS — — Public sentiment so far seems to be leaning toward two of the four Colorado Department of Transportation alignment alternatives still on the table for a new Grand Avenue Bridge.

“We have had a lot of interest being expressed in Alternatives 1 and 3, while there are some concerns about Alternatives 4 and 6,” Craig Gaskill, CDOT’s consulting engineer with Jacobs Engineering, said during a recent update and discussion with the Garfield County commissioners.

That input came from a June 6 public open house to present the four CDOT alternatives, as well as a June 7 meeting with Glenwood Springs City Council and a June 12 meeting with the county commissioners.

Alternative 1 is the single-bridge option that would maintain the existing bridge alignment from Grand Avenue on the south, spanning Seventh Street, the railroad tracks, the Colorado River and Interstate 70 to the intersection of Sixth and Pine on the north side.

One drawback with that option, Gaskill said at the meeting with county commissioners, is that it would likely require longer bridge closures and Highway 82 traffic detours during construction.
