LONGMONT — Fireworks sales are free to start booming again.

Longmont officials announced Monday that fireworks stands would be allowed to operate in the city this year. The announcement comes despite an executive order by Gov. John Hickenlooper banning the private use of fireworks throughout Colorado.

“We can certainly understand the governor’s position,” said Sandi Seader, assistant to the city manager. But while Hickenlooper was responding to conditions statewide, she said, the risk within Longmont didn’t seem higher than any other year.

“So long as Longmont residents use legal products, the risk of fireworks is very low,” Seader said. “If people are using illegal fireworks — such as the ones that leave the ground — that’s what increases the risk.”

The executive order permits municipalities to rule on the use of fireworks within their own city or town limits.
