DULUTH, minn. — The waters in Duluth, Minn., are receding, but the damage is done: The northeastern Minnesota city estimates more than $100 million will be required to repair utilities, streets, parks and trails in the city and surrounding county, said Pakou Ly, a spokeswoman for Duluth.
The State Department of Transportation estimates its roads have sustained $20 million worth of damage.
Flash floods tore through the city this week after 7 inches of rain came down on ground already saturated by previous storms. Water cascaded down the hilly landscape and swelled the creeks and rivers that lace the area, flooding roads and washing out streets and bridges.
No one has been reported killed, although an 8-year-old boy suffered cuts and a concussion after being sucked into a culvert and sent zooming through an underground storm sewer before being spat out six blocks away.
