NEDERLAND — Officials suspect a bear broke into two cars on Hurricane Hill for a quick snack Thursday night, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
A group of people staying at a vacation house in the 500 block of Hurricane Hill — just outside of Nederland — found that two of their cars had been broken into when they checked on them Friday morning, according to Deputy Chris Norcia with the Sheriff’s Office.
No one saw the bear, but Norcia said investigators found muddy prints that led them to believe a bear was the culprit. He added there were remnants of food wrappers in the car and that no valuables in the car had been touched.
The owners of the cars said they had been keeping some food in the car, which Norcia said likely attracted the bear.
“With our current weather conditions and the lack of moisture and food, the bears are more likely to get into trouble,” he said.
Norcia said the cars were largely undamaged aside from some muddy floors.
