Residents of a three-story apartment complex in Aurora may be without homes after a fire ripped through the building late Sunday night.

Allen Robnett, a spokesman for the Aurora Fire Department, said the call came in about 10:50 p.m. from the Huntington Ridge apartments on 9937 E. Louisiana Drive.

Neighbors reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the second story.

Miraf Gebrescadik, was one of those neighbors.

“I just came out here to say good-bye to my family, and I smelled the smoke,” she said. “Then I turned around and saw small flames coming from the left side of the building.”

Gebrescadik also saw two of the complex’s groundskeepers run into the building with fire extinguishers.

Fire crews had to move from attacking the fire inside to working from the outside. Though flames have been put out, firefighters are still checking the building and assessing the damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
