COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Gov. John Hickenlooper’s statewide ban on private fireworks didn’t stop some people from having them.

The Gazette reports ( ) Colorado Springs police arrested five people Wednesday night on suspicion of possessing or discharging fireworks.

Personal fireworks have long been illegal in the city, but some varieties were legal in El Paso County. However Hickenlooper banned private fireworks statewide in June after dry conditions fueled major wildfires, and several jurisdictions in the Pikes Peak region had fire restrictions this July 4.

City police said they received 192 calls for service relating to fireworks Wednesday night, and officers seized six bags of fireworks.

Thousands of Colorado Springs residents have been affected by the Waldo Canyon wildfire, which has killed two people and burned almost 350 homes. The fire’s cause hasn’t been determined.
