There won’t be a 32nd annual Hot Air Balloon Rodeo after all.
Steamboat Today reported that one day after fire officials said they were confident the annual hot-air-balloon festival didn’t pose a fire danger, the Routt County Sheriff’s Office requested that the event’s permit be revoked.
As a result, there will be no Hot Air Balloon Rodeo this weekend, Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association officials confirmed.
“As the (event) review deepened this week and as additional review was done by the Sheriff’s Office, it was really their determination that the event posed a greater potential risk to the community,” Chamber chief executive Tom Kern said. “They had to make a tough call. It’s a call we respect and we know was made with a lot of thought.”
DOUGLAS COUNTY —
Divers recover body in Chatfield Reservoir
A dive team recovered a body in the Chatfield Reservoir on Wednesday in an area where a man was reported missing Saturday, authorities say.
The Douglas County coroner’s office will confirm whether the remains are those of the man who went missing, according to authorities.
Family members of the man called the Douglas County sheriff’s office Saturday evening after the man went missing, and a search for him was unsuccessful, said Sgt. Ron Hanavan of the Douglas County sheriff’s office.
The Littleton Police Department’s dive team searched for the man in the reservoir Saturday through Wednesday.
The body was found around 7 a.m. near Loop C of the reservoir, Hanavan said.
“We don’t think this was the result of foul play,” he said.
GRAND JUNCTION —
National Monument bid to become park on hold
Colorado National Monument won’t be up for consideration as a new national park in the near future.
U.S. Sen. Mark Udall and U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton won’t bring a bill to Congress this year to change the designation for the 20,000-acre monument in western Colorado, the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported.
A community group appointed to study the change concluded that it couldn’t recommend the designation because of neighbors’ division over the idea.
