The West Nile virus is officially back in Adams and Boulder counties.
Officials with the Tri-County Health Department confirmed that some samples of trapped mosquitoes recently tested positive for the virus in Adams County. The infected mosquitoes were found at two trapping locations, including one at East 104th Avenue and Riverdale Road and another at East 124th Avenue and Holly Street, said Tom Butts, director of environmental health for the department.
The mosquitoes were trapped about two weeks ago, he said. There have not been any positive cases since, he said.
A pool of infected mosquitoes was found Tuesday at a pond at Jim Hamm Nature Area in Longmont.
“They (scientists) grind them up and use testing equipment … that can test for the virus,” said Marshal Lipps, an Environmental Health Specialist for the county.
No human cases of West Nile have been reported so far this year.
