ASPEN, Colo.—Garfield County authorities say they’re keeping a fire ban in place, a day after Gov. John Hickenlooper lifted a statewide ban.

Officials from Garfield County, its cities and its fire departments said Monday the decision was based on local conditions and not the governor’s action.

The ban includes campfires and charcoal grills, smoking tobacco outdoors and other activities.

The Aspen Daily News reported Monday ( ) that Pitkin County and the White River National Forest are also keeping restrictions in place on most open flames.

The state fire ban that Hickenlooper imposed on June 14 applied to open burning, including campfires, warming fires, charcoal grill fires, fused explosives and private fireworks.

Hickenlooper says local authorities and federal land managers still have control over fire bans in their jurisdictions.
