Modular Robotics Inc., a Boulder company that makes robot construction kits for children, received a $3 million investment from the Foundry Group, the companies said Tuesday.

The Boulder-based venture capital firm said it met with Eric Schweikardt, founder of Modular Robotics, also known as ModRobotics, and learned about its recently invented “Cubelets.”

“Cubelets are magnetic blocks that can be snapped together to make an endless variety of robots with no programming and no wires,” Foundry Group said in a release. “You can build robots that drive around on a tabletop, respond to light, sound and temperature, and have surprisingly lifelike behavior.”

The Foundry Group noted that each Cubelet is programmable so the behavior can be specifically changed and controlled through software.

Modular Robotics said in a statement that the Foundry Group “has had amazing success with tech companies and they also happen to invest in all of our friends like Orbotix, Sifteo, and MakerBot .
