ERIE — A construction worker and a school district employee were critically injured Wednesday in an explosion in Erie Middle School’s gymnasium that shook nearby homes and caused part of the building’s roof to collapse.
Another injured construction worker has been released from the hospital, officials said Wednesday night.
No students or teachers were in the building at the time of the explosion, which occurred in a part of the school that is being renovated, officials said.
While investigators said they have not determined a cause, St. Vrain Valley School District Superintendent Don Haddad said Wednesday night the explosion apparently was caused by a gas leak. But, he said, it is still under investigation.
