Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman, confirmed reports of a fire late Thursday in a 2 ½-story building near Pecos Street and W. 12th Ave.

The commercial structure at 1500 W. 12th Ave. is believed to be a former Habitat for Humanity building.

“It appears vacant, but there is some merchandise in there,” Champagne said.

He said a call came in around 10:30 p.m., and it took fire officials approximately 40 minutes to fully extinguish the “heavily involved” blaze.

“Fortunately no one was there,” he said, adding that there is fire damage throughout the building.

The cause of the fire that encompassed all of the building’s floors is undetermined. Champagne said fire investigators are currently on scene.
