BOULDER —
If you like going to the movies, you’ll love what the University of Colorado has planned for the Fiske Planetarium.
The planetarium, which is more than 40 years old, will see a major overhaul in the next year as it becomes a 360-degree video theater, turning the facility’s dome into a mass-projection screen.
“We’re going to fill an entire planetarium dome with ultra-high-definition video,” said Douglas Duncan, director of Fiske Planetarium. “It will have dozens of times more detail than HDTV. And once it goes in, you can imagine us showing any kinds of video.”
Duncan estimated that the remodel — unofficially dubbed “Digital Fiske” or “The Immersive Theater at Fiske” — will be open in fall 2013 and be able to seat 240 people, about 30 more than now. It also will create about 10 more campus jobs available to students.
The remodel will cost $2.5 million, university officials said. It is being funded by donations and the university itself as part of CU’s upgrade of certain facilities, a project that also includes nearby dormitories.
