ASPEN, Colo.—Pitkin County commissioners have decided not to ask voters to raise sales taxes to fund public schools because of tough economic times.
Commissioners said Tuesday too many people are hurting financially to ask for an additional quarter of a percent sales tax increase.
According to the Aspen Times ( ), the Aspen School District is trying to cover shortfalls in state funding estimated at about $800,000 per year and give salary increases to its staff.
The current sales tax collected within the city of Aspen is 9 percent.
