A bat found dead on Monday in El Paso County has tested positive for the rabies virus, the local health department said Thursday.
The bat was found near the entrance of the Starsmore Discovery Center at 2120 S. Cheyenne Cañon Road, but there have been no reports of anyone being bitten or otherwise exposed.
The bat was seen acting unusually Saturday and Sunday, as well, at the El Paso County Public Health Department is asking anyone who has information to call 719-578-3220 Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., or after-hours at 719-339-3230.
Meanwhile, the San Juan Basin Health Department in Durango said Thursday a La Plata County resident is taking rabies shots after being bitten Sunday at a park along the Animas River.
The age and gender of the victim was not available, nor other information about where the park is located, in a media release from the agency. A spokeswoman for the health department was not immediately available to elaborate on the details of the bat bite Thursday night.
