If you scanned NBC’s channels for Olympic rugby in London and couldn’t find it, it’s because the event doesn’t exist. Not yet, anyway.
In 2016, at the Rio de Janeiro Games in Brazil, Rugby sevens will compete for the first time since 15-a-side rugby was in the Olympics in 1924.
But you can jump-start your gold medal scouting Saturday in Glendale when the Serevi RugbyTown Sevens Tournament plays out at Infinity Park starting at noon.
Teams in the international bracket include: the Glendale Raptors; Tiger Rugby from Long Beach, Calif.; the USA Falcons; the USA Collegiate All-Americans; the Chicago Lions; Old Puget Sound Beach; and the Serevi Selects.
The Selects should be the ones to watch, with an international roster led by Fiji’s Waisale Serevi, a seven-time rugby World Cup veteran, along with former England captain Ben Gollings and Argentinian Santiago Gomez Cora.
