ASPEN, Colo.—Federal authorities say they have to rely on wiretaps and other clandestine techniques because Aspen’s small-town atmosphere and attitude toward the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration makes it nearly impossible to investigate drug cases.

According to the Aspen Daily News ( ), a federal court filing made public on Wednesday details a 15-month investigation that resulted in five guilty pleas from Aspen-area residents and the arrest of a former Aspen man.

Federal authorities are opposing a motion to quash wiretap evidence the DEA collected on Montgomery Chitty, who is charged in the case.
