The Avalanche signed veteran goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere to a $1.5 million extension, locking in the 35-year-old goalie through the 2013-14 season, the team announced Monday.
“J.S. provided leadership, stability and a veteran presence to our team last season,” said Avalanche general manager Greg Sherman in a statement. “He helped solidify our goaltending position and we are pleased to have J.S. under contract for the next two seasons.”
Giguere joined Colorado a year ago, signing a two-year, $2.5 million deal to be Semyon Varlamov’s mentor/backup. Giguere and Varlamov are now both locked in the next two seasons, the first of which is under a cloud of doubt because of the Sept. 15 expiration of the current collective bargaining agreement.
Giguere played in 32 games last season, with a 15-11-3 record, 2.28 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
