A native of Colorado, Sasha Marsh always knew she wanted to attend college in the Centennial State. After receiving a scholarship to Colorado State University, she enrolled as an undergraduate and studied biology for several years before life circumstances forced her to change her plans.

As a single mother, Sasha could no longer commit to her degree program and instead entered the work world to provide for her young son, “but I knew I wanted to go back and complete a degree at CSU,” Sasha said. When Colorado State launched its online Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) bachelor’s degree completion program, it was the perfect fit for Sasha, knowing she wanted to pursue a career in healthcare.

“I can maintain full-time status as a student, because I can do my school work on my schedule, when the kids are at school, late at night after they have gone to bed, or on the weekends,” Sasha said.

Sasha said she’s enjoyed the broad focus of the HDFS program, which has allowed her to study psychology, sociology, social work and aspects of biology in regards to human development. She’s also received hands-on, practical experiences, completing an internship through the Head Start program in Littleton and a practicum at the Douglas County Women’s Shelter.

“From writing a research report on the effects of divorce on children, to developing a grant, to creating a proposal for job training for ex-prisoners, this program has given me the opportunity to look further into current social issues while expanding my own interests,” she said. “In the HDFS degree program, I’ve learned so much about so many different topics.”

Sasha plans to use her new Human Development and Families Studies degree to continue her education with an advanced degree in healthcare, which she couldn’t do without her bachelor’s. She credits the HDFS staff and professors – along with the overall philosophy of CSU – with allowing her to excel in the program and take charge of her education.

“I have grown so much in this degree program,” Sasha said. “Personally, I’m a better parent, partner and individual. Professionally, I’m more knowledgeable, prepared, competent and skilled.”

Colorado State University offers four undergraduate degree completion programs through OnlinePlus, including Fire and Emergency Services Administration, Liberal Arts, Agricultural Business and the HDFS program you read about here.
