Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for , said the national average has spiked 25 cents a gallon in the last month due to an “onslaught of refinery problems” mainly in the Great Lakes and California.
“While these situations are temporary in nature, it goes to show this nation’s dependence on domestic refineries,” said DeHaan.
DeHaan said that motorists should expect prices to level out as the summer driving season is almost over and the Environmental Protection Agency will soon relax certain gasoline restrictions meaning cheaper winter fuel.
