Fountain police on Monday named the man
Stephen Payne, 34, is an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Carson.
Police were called to the home in the 800 block of Daffodil Street at about 12:45 a.m. Sunday after a report of shots being fired inside the home, where Payne was allegedly arguing with his wife. His two children were in the home.
After a short standoff with police, Payne “followed family members into the front yard armed with a handgun. Payne did not respond to the officer’s commands and reached for the handgun. The officer fired at Payne, striking him multiple times,” Fountain police said in a statement Monday.
Payne is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, police said. His family members and police officers were unharmed.
The officer involved in the shooting is on standard three day administrative leave while the shooting is reviewed.
