Valor Christian, you are again the favorite.
The Eagles, moving up to Class 5A after three consecutive championships — two in 4A, another in 3A — sit atop The Denver Post’s preseason football poll of coaches and media members around the state. Valor received ten first-place votes and 134 points overall, ahead of second-ranked Columbine, which got four first-places votes and 127 points.
Pomona is third in 5A, while Grandview and Mullen round out the top five.
Cherry Creek will start the season ranked sixth, and is followed by Ralston Valley, Grand Junction, ThunderRidge and Chaparral.
Valor’s exit from 4A leaves a bit of uncertainty in that class — six different teams received first-place votes, including preseason No. 1 Monarch. Other teams getting first-place votes included No. 2 Longmont, No. 4 Pine Creek, No. 6 Denver South and No. 8 Windsor. Unranked Falcon also got a first-place vote.
Broomfield (third) and Wheat Ridge (fifth) are the other top-five 4A teams.
Frederick leads the preseason 3A poll, despite not receiving a single first-place vote. Rifle got the most first-place votes in the classification with four, but is ranked third behind No. 2 D’Evelyn.
The other preseason No. 1 teams: Florence (2A), Hotchkiss (1A), Daypsring Christian (8-man) and Fleming (6-man).
