GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Mesa County officials are writing off more than $37,000 in unpaid taxes, saying the businesses that owe them are considered closed.
The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported Tuesday ( ) that county commissioners decided to write off the debts after County Treasurer Janice Rich brought up the topic.
Rich says sending delinquent notices to non-existent businesses isn’t a good use of other taxpayers’ money.
The largest unpaid tax bill to be written off was nearly $5,530.
The taxes were incurred between 2003 and 2010.
