DENVER—Authorities say a 30-year-old man accused of killing his mother and grandmother in Kirk was being monitored for mental health problems at an Aurora hospital two weeks before the murders.

Aurora police officer Frank Fania says Tyler Withrow was taken to the hospital and put on a mental health hold two weeks before the Aug. 13 murders of Withrow’s grandmother, Elva Doddridge, and his mother, Dianne.

KMGH-TV ( ) reports Withrow was put on the mental health hold after he allegedly broke car windows and a neighbor’s window July 27. Police say they found Withrow naked and used a stun gun to subdue him. For his safety, he was put on a medical center hold for 72 hours before he was released.

Fania says the hospital never told police Withrow was being released because to do so would have violated federal law.
