Retail gasoline prices fell slightly in Denver last week, bucking the national trend of higher gasoline prices, according to gasoline price website

The average retail gasoline prices in Denver fell 0.8 cents per gallon to an average of $3.44 a gallon on Sunday, the site reported. That contrasts with a 3 cent per gallon increase nationally to $3.73 over the same period.

Including the change in gas prices in Denver during the past week, prices yesterday were 3.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 2.3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has increased 23.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 11.8 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Denver area gasoline prices have generally followed their own course this year and for the most part have trended below the U.S. average, reflecting a growing supply of domestic oil being produced in the region.

Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan said he is concerned that tropical storm Isaac could disrupt Gulf Coast refineries as it becomes a hurricane, driving up gasoline prices ahead of the Labor Day weekend.

“It’s entirely within the realm of possibility that we see refinery outages, oil production losses, and gasoline supply issues — essentially all the things you don’t want to happen,” he said.
