GREELEY, Colo.—The Weld County assessor says increased activity by oil and gas companies has helped increase the taxable assessed property value of the county by more than $1 billion.

County Assessor Chris Woodruff says the final taxable assessed property value for Weld County for 2012 is $6.515 billion. The Greeley Tribune reports ( ) that’s about $1.1 billion more than 2011, representing a roughly 20 percent increase.

Woodruff says there has been some increase in residential property values. But the bulk of the increase came from increased activity by oil and gas companies across rural areas, primarily in the Wattenberg Field, stretching from just west of Fort Lupton to Kersey.

Weld County lies above some of the more lucrative parts of the Niobrara formation.
