September features several changes that are not only seasonal — the first day of autumn is Sept. 22 — but also in the overall weather pattern. Sunny skies are very common this month in northeast Colorado; the highest monthly percentage of sunshine is during the month of September.
Unseasonably warm and hot temperatures have been very common so far this year in the Denver area.
As of Aug. 28, there have been 63 days (between May 1 and Aug. 28) in which the high temperature has been above 90 degrees. This is the most of any year on record. In addition, there have been 13 days in which the afternoon high has topped out over 100 degrees.
Record heat is not unheard of during September but will become less frequent because of the change in the overall weather pattern, as well as the days becoming shorter.
It has not happened since 2000, but snowfall has also occurred this month in Denver. Back in September 1971, 17.2 inches of snow fell.
The latest forecast from the Climate Prediction Center is for above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation for Denver and northeastern Colorado this month.
