DENVER—U.S. postal inspectors are investigating how mail sent to the man charged in the Colorado theater massacre was forwarded after the shooting to a Pennsylvania resident.
Denver’s KUSA-TV reported Friday ( ) that a man it identified as Jonathan Riches, of West Chester, Pa., posted a picture of a magazine addressed to Holmes after the July 20 shooting on a Facebook page. The magazine was dated Aug. 20.
That may have prompted a U.S. Postal Service investigation into whether someone filed a fraudulent change of address form for Holmes after he was arrested at the theater in the Denver suburb of Aurora.
Holmes has been in custody ever since, and he was formally evicted from his Aurora apartment shortly after his arrest. He is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder in the shooting, which killed 12 people and wounded 58.
Attempts to contact Riches weren’t immediately successful.
U.S. Postal Service spokesman David Rupert said Friday the forwarding order was canceled. Rupert declined further comment, citing an ongoing investigation.
Anyone submitting false or inaccurate information in changing an address with the Postal Service can face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
