Boulder County is completing an update of its policies and strategies for managing prairie dogs on county-owned lands, including about 7,745 acres of grassland that’s now or could potentially be suitable for prairie dog habitat conservation areas.

The county already has about 3,300 acres designated as habitat conservation areas and another 4,419 acres categorized as multiple-objective areas that can support prairie dogs along with other activities such as trails and grazing.

More than 17,850 acres of county-owned properties, though, are designated “no-prairie-dog areas” — including properties the county leases out for agriculture and where prairie dog colonies would be incompatible with farming.
