COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado State linebacker Cory James was named Mountain West defensive player of the week. In his first career start in Saturday’s season opener, the freshman compiled seven tackles, six solo, and a forced fumble as the Rams defeated in-state rival Colorado 22-17. He registered three sacks and one other tackle for a loss, becoming the first Ram to record three or more sacks in his first career game. Special-teams honors went to CSU sophomore kicker Jared Roberts, who connected on all three of his field-goal attempts. Nevada running back Stefphon Jefferson received MW offensive recognition.
