GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A public hearing is scheduled Tuesday on a proposal for two egg farms in Delta County, where dozens of people have signed petitions voicing concerns.
One of the egg-laying facilities is already operational in Powell Mesa, with about 15,000 cage-free hens. The other facility is proposed for Redlands Mesa. Facility owner Edwin Hostetler declined to comment.
The Daily Sentinel reports ( ) the hearing is the result of a judge’s decision that found an “abuse of discretion” in county commissioners’ approval of the facilities.
The judge sent the case back to commissioners, saying there needs to be additional findings on whether the operations are compatible with the neighborhood, effects on property values, whether environmental concerns have been addressed, and whether county staff can monitor and enforce the conditions of approval.
