Getting your player ready...

After wildfires ripped through Colorado this summer, Jessica Ghawi had an idea to help. She wanted to collect used sporting goods for kids who lost their homes to the fires, as a way to help them get back to normalcy.

Ghawi was killed July 20 in the Aurora theater shooting, but her idea will carry on. On Saturday in the Pepsi Center parking lot, volunteers will run a sports- equipment drive for people to donate new and gently used items for victims of the wildfires.

The event runs from 7 a.m. to noon. Ghawi’s family, along with Kroenke Sports Charities, will work with A Precious Child, a local nonprofit organization, to collect the equipment (cash donations also will be accepted).

“She knew what an important role sports played in communities,” Jay Meloff, her boyfriend, told The Denver Post. “She knew that sports are something that can really help kids bounce back, give them something to look forward to even in the worst of circumstances.”
