Phillies’ Pierre steals way past Maury Wills in record book

PHILADELPHIA — Even before Friday’s scoreboard tribute and the accompanying standing ovation for Jimmy Rollins’ 2,000 hits, Juan Pierre envied his teammate.

“I would have liked to play my entire career in one place,” Pierre said Friday.

Pierre cried when the Rockies traded him to the Marlins after the 2002 season. Colorado didn’t want to surrender the center fielder, but it was the only way to move Mike Hampton’s contract. Known for his work ethic, Pierre won a ring with the Marlins and accomplished something Friday that left him in awe. By swiping second and third base in the third inning, he passed Maury Wills for 19th on the all-time stolen base list with 588.

“It’s hard to believe. He helped me a lot when I was with the Dodgers,” Pierre said.

Short story. Troy Tulowitzki made difficult fielding plays and scored from second on a base hit Thursday for Double-A Tulsa, leaving him in position to the join the Rockies next week, possibly Monday against the Giants. Even when Tulowitzki returns, he’s not expected to play nine innings or play several games in a row as a concession to his surgically repaired left groin.

Footnotes. The Rockies’ interleague schedule is not official, but they are expected to have a home series with the Red Sox on Sept. 24-25, while traveling to Boston in June. The National League West is playing the American League East next season. … Josh Rutledge started at shortstop. He will continue to see time at short but will shift to second when Tulowitzki plays.
