COLORADO SPRINGS — A body that was found in a burning car near the summit of Pikes Peak was so badly charred that investigators couldn’t tell if the victim was a man or a woman.
The Police Department’s major-accident unit went up the Pikes Peak Highway about a half-mile from the summit house after rangers were notified of the body’s discovery at 6:10 p.m. Sunday.
Police said Monday that the body and vehicle were extremely charred and unidentifiable. They said it could be “a considerable amount of time” before a positive identification is possible.
The vehicle is believed to be a four-door passenger car, possibly a Subaru with a black roof.
Police were investigating how the body got there and hadn’t said whether they believe the death was the result of a crash or some other cause.
