is gearing up for a Broadway bow, almost 20 years after his death.
The deceased rapper’s songs will , “Holler if Ya Hear Me,” hopefully set to debut in the 2013-2014 season.
According to Rolling Stone, the musical will be produced by Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur. It’s an, “original story about two childhood friends in a fictional Midwestern industrial city as they struggle to meet their dreams in the face of tough circumstances.”
Director Kenny Leon, who has also directed “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Fences”, toldthat, “Tupac was a prophet and I want everyone to see that.” Todd Kreidler wrote the book, with Tony-winner Wayne Cilento of “Wicked” and “Sweet Charity” choreographing. The musical is currently being workshopped, with no cast announced yet.
The musical is set in the present day, using Tupac’s music, but he is not a character.
No word yet on if hologram Tupac will make a cameo appearance in the musical, like he did at Coachella last year, but since the soon after, odds are his music will have to stand alone.
