“Any time you choose to better yourself, you better all of us.”

Those words, spoken by Dr. Julie Basler, vice president of academic affairs at Denver’s Platt College, served as the overarching theme of this year’s Colorado Association of Career Colleges and Schools annual awards ceremony, held last Friday, Sept. 7 at The Denver Post.

Sixteen students were recognized at the event – eight as students of the year in eight disciplines, and another eight earning meritorious recognition. They represent the finest of the over 30,000 students who attend private career colleges in Colorado, said Steve Durham, executive director of CACCS, in opening remarks.

“All of you have taken the first step in changing the world, and that is changing yourselves,” he said.

Basler, the event’s keynote speaker, said that people who make the effort to better themselves through education have a responsibility to use their new-found knowledge and skill to help others.

“By choosing to attend a post-secondary school, you have chosen to improve your community,” said Basler. “You have given yourself, your time, your wisdom and your best effort to succeed to better the environment you live in.

“No one can take your education and knowledge away. But my charge to you is the give back the talent, knowledge and wisdom away freely and generously to those around you.”
