LONGMONT, Colo.—Some of the elected officials in 10 Colorado counties and 17 towns say they’re disappointed in the state’s decision to sue Longmont over the city’s oil and gas drilling rules.

In a letter Wednesday to Gov. John Hickenlooper, the officials said Longmont adopted its rules to protect its residents from potential adverse impacts of drilling. County commissioners in Summit, Pitkin and Boulder counties were among those signing the letter.

The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission this summer filed a lawsuit challenging the rules that Longmont’s City Council passed in July. The lawsuit argues the rules cover areas that are meant to be governed by the state.
