Railway workers in Nebraska on Friday found the body of a retired firefighter who went missing while riding a Chicago-bound Amtrack train last week.
The body of Charlie Dowd, 69, of San Mateo, Calif., was spotted near Haigler, Neb. after a search of the area between Fort Morgan and McCook, Neb.
Bereaved family members announced the discovery and issued a statement expressing gratitude for prayers and support — and for the efforts of volunteers who helped search for Dowd over the past week.
Dowd’s family last heard from him Sept. 13 when his train was leaving Denver. He was taking a trip to visit relatives in Montreal, Canada. When the train reached Chicago on Sept. 14, Amtrak officials found his luggage, cellphone and medications — but not Dowd.
San Mateo police detectives joined a search over 160 miles of railroad track between Fort Morgan and McCook.
