A condo fire in Golden started by an 11-year-old girl cooking caused around $700,000 in damages, according to the Golden Fire Department.

Four units were damaged, some destroyed, by the fire that started Monday when a girl, home alone, got paper towels too close to the stove, according to a news release.

The girl took the burning paper towels outside, but those caught the balcony on fire, which is when the child left and called 911 from a neighbor’s location, the release stated.

“In this situation, this young lady did everything correctly,” said Golden Fire Chief John Bales in the news release. “She attempted to fix the problem, evacuated the residence and called 911.”

Residents of those four units are currently displaced, staying with relatives or in hotels, according to the release.

No one was injured in the fire, but two cats died, the release stated.
