pulled out a few tricks at the opening of his new skate park in New Orleans on Wednesday. The rapper, who has been skating for only a year and a half, wanted to give back to his hometown: the park is in the Lower 9th Ward, a section of the city greatly devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Lil Wayne told the he wanted to help out his city and give the children something they hadn’t had before. The park was constructed with recycled materials and runs on solar energy On opening day, Lil Wayne showed off some tricks, but didn’t always land them.

Partnering with Mountain Dew and Glu Agency, an advertising firm, Lil Wayne launched the skate park, which will be open to the public seven days a week, starting Monday.

Jamal Henderson, Mountain Dew marketing director, said “There’s such a pent-up demand for this place. Young people want to skate, and now they have a destination.”

In 2011, Wayne injured himself while skateboarding, leaving a scar over his left eye. He told the people at the park’s opening he knows he won’t land every trick, but the rush comes from trying.
