CENTENNIAL, Colo.—James Holmes, the man suspected in the mass shooting at a suburban Denver movie theater over the summer, is due to appear in court Thursday.

During the scheduled proceedings, lawyers are expected to discuss when they’ll be ready for a preliminary hearing, a public airing of the evidence gathered against Holmes.

Such a hearing could be held next month or it could be delayed depending on what prosecutors and defense lawyers tell Judge William B. Sylvester.

In a court filing Tuesday, prosecutors said they may not be ready by next month. They say they are still getting medical records for the victims, which could total more than 100,000 pages. They also say Aurora police are still reviewing files and evidence collected by hundreds of police officers from numerous agencies.

Sylvester will use the preliminary hearing to determine whether the case against the former University of Colorado graduate student should go to trial.

Holmes, 24, remains in jail, accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others July 20 shooting in Aurora.

Also Thursday, mediator Ken Feinberg begins meeting with shooting victims and their families as he decides how to distribute charitable donations to them.
