As a songwriter and vocalist for , shares the spotlight with six bandmates, including her sister. By now, it must be a familiar comfort for the artist and, at times, she must feel the need to – ahem – spread her wings. Just as others in the band have, Patterson has a side project, , but that project with the other Paper Bird ladies is mostly satire. For a long time, fans have wondered when they can hear Esmé and only Esmé (without a Paper Bird break-up, of course).
Here, available for streaming, is “Sun Up 2 Sun Down” from her forthoming solo album, “All Princes, I.” She hasn’t strayed too far from the Paper Bird sound, but Patterson solo is certainly not just a pared down version of what she does with the ensemble. On “All Princes, I,” Patterson shares songs she’s kicked around for years, sometimes performing live. They are emotionally raw and intimate, and itap a joy to hear her classic voice for an entire album with an impressive production from . Some Denver buddies like and make appearances, and the album will be released next month by the .
