Getting your player ready...

If you’ve always wanted to meet the hero of “No Buddy Left Behind,” retired Army Sgt. Major David Dantzler, here’s your shot. Dantzler and his unit found, rescued and then adopted three Anatolian shepherd mixes while serving in Iraq, fueling the writing of “No Buddy Left Behind” by the manager of Operation Baghdad Pups, a program that helps reunite veterans with the dogs who helped them in combat. Dantzler will be the featured speaker and will sign books at the 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $25; the event is at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave. in Durango. lpchumanesociety.org

If you’re entering, here’s the gist of Petco’s photo tips: Get animals used to the costume early; pose them somewhere they feel comfortable; and if you’re a novice, shoot in an outdoor setting for the best light.
