GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—A former financial officer for the town of Paonia is accused of stealing nearly $400,000 from the town between 2007 and 2012 for personal expenses.
The Daily Sentinel reports () Kristin Chesnik was issued a summons Tuesday on suspicion of theft. She didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment Wednesday.
Paonia Mayor Neal Schwieterman has said an auditor reviewing town finances notified him Dec. 14, 2011, of “potential problems.” Chesnik was placed on administrative leave two days later and resigned Jan. 25.
Schwieterman says authorities have asked town officials not to discuss extensive details of the case with reporters. He says many town employees may be subpoenaed to testify.
