KIOWA, Colo.—Elbert County planning officials are considering whether to require oil and gas companies to keep wells at least a quarter-mile from homes.
The Denver Post reports ( ) that a panel that has been developing guidelines for how the county deals with hydraulic fracturing has recommended keeping wells 1,320 feet from homes, as well as banning companies from storing fracturing fluid in open pits. Hydraulic fracturing involves blasting water, chemicals and sand deep under to free oil and natural gas.
The Elbert County Planning Commission is scheduled to consider recommendations Thursday. County commissioners would have to sign off on changes.
