About the time lack of response on the part of the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport becomes an issue, remember this – a good paddling is what it needs.

When its continuously variable transmission sounds off at midrange trying to catch up to engine speed, pull the magnesium alloy paddle shifter on either side of the steering wheel to lock the tranny into a gear, pull the one on the left once more to drop it a gear lower, then proceed with adequate power.

The Outlander Sport all-wheel drive, noted for outstanding fuel mileage (EPA 24/29), seems underpowered with its 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and CVT transmission; fortunately, it gets up and goes through use of those paddles. Torque rating is 145 lbs.-ft.

Positives, in addition to its economy, are a stylish exterior and a well-equipped interior at a relatively low sticker price.

A $28,570 tab on the SE model I drove included a panoramic sunroof, Rockford Fosgate sound system with 10-inch subwoofer, navigation, rearview camera, push-button start, 18-inch wheels, side-curtain and knee airbags, hill-start assist, automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather-covered steering wheel and shift knob, Sirius satellite radio, power windows/locks/mirrors, rain-sense wipers and rear spoiler.
All it takes for engaging four-wheel drive is the push of a button on the center console. Otherwise, it operates in front-drive mode.
The Mitsubishi averaged 25.9 miles per gallon in 210 miles of use, 125 of which was on the highway.

The Outlander Sport is the company’s best seller. Of slightly more than 4,000 sales in December, 43 percent were Sport models. Other Mitsus are the seven-passenger Outlander, the Lancer, Galant and a handful of i-MEV electrics.

Sales have slumped in recent years and Mitsubishi rests far below most of the mainstream builders. Oh, sure, it outsells Jaguar and Porsche, but they’re premium luxury automobiles at much higher prices.

Because of its AWD setup, the Outlander Sport has somewhat better sales in the Denver area than it does nationally.

The Sport boasts a roomy rear seating area; consequently, the cargo space at the far back measures only 21.7 cubic feet, below that of most competitors.

The compact SUV crossover, on a short wheelbase of 105.1 inches, is 169.1 inches in overall length, 69.7 wide and stands 64.2 inches tall. It weighs 3,265 pounds. It is built in Normal, Ill.
