HUGO, Colo.—An 18-year-old who pleaded guilty to killing his great-grandparents in Hugo has been sentenced to life in prison.
The Denver Post reports ( ) Gregory Smith was sentenced this week in the shooting deaths of Chuck and Laura Clagett in 2011. Smith pleaded guilty to first-degree murder last November. He had been charged as an adult.
Smith had been living with the Clagetts. According to an arrest affidavit, investigators found the Claggetts’ bodies after Smith got into a rollover accident in his great-grandparents’ truck and a school principal alerted authorities that a student said Smith had shown her photos of his great-grandparents dead in bed.
The affidavit allegedly says Smith told authorities his great-grandfather was in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s and that his great-grandmother didn’t know what to do.
