FOUNTAIN, Colo.—Police in Fountain say a 3-year-old boy has been taken to a hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the foot with a handgun.

Police say the .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun went off after the boy found it in a master bedroom Wednesday morning.

The boy’s mother was home at the time but didn’t see the child get the gun.

KKTV in Colorado Springs reported ( ) the boy was in stable condition Wednesday night. His name has not been released.

It wasn’t immediately known whether anyone would face charges.

The child’s father is a Fort Carson soldier.
