CENTENNIAL, Colo.—Authorities say a 41-year-old man broke into an Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office substation and tried to open a gun safe as deputies ordered him to come out of the building.
A sheriff’s office news release says Philip Thomas Brown will be charged with criminal mischief, obstruction and burglary.
Deputies say that after arriving at the substation at 12:45 a.m. Saturday, they noticed a broken glass pane and a man inside. They say Brown was holding a ballistic shield over his chest as he tried to open the safe, and when deputies called the substation, the man answered: “Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office.”
Brown eventually came outside and was taken down by a police dog.
Investigators say he told them he broke into the building because he is homeless and has the flu.
