Four Colorado athletes were honored Thursday by USA Triathlon as elite athletes of the year for 2012.

Mary Beth Ellis and fellow Boulder resident Cameron Dye were named the top elites among those who focus on events that do not allow drafting, such as Ironman and half-Ironman events.

Lukas Verzbicas of Colorado Springs was named the male rookie of the year, and Greg Billington of Colorado Springs was named the top male under-23 racer.

Sarah Groff of Hanover, N.H., and Jarrod Shoemaker of Clermont, Fla., were named the top elites in draft-legal, ITU racing.
